Story: Selkie History

Back to Story Home

First spotted by Human sailors, the human-seal race known as the Selkie was one of many humanoid races that graced the seas in the distant past. Once the many races congregated at an island near the center of the Sea of Winds. This island was the propriety of the Goddess Irriane, who at the time had yet to make her presence known to the world. The many humanoid sea races worshiped Irriane as their patron goddess for generations uncounted.

At this time the Selkie had homes up and down the eastern coast of Lensmoor and made frequent trips to the unnamed island by the will of their goddess. They fished, hunted, and played beneath the seas upon which humans had only begun to explore.

In time however, due to unknown reasons, many things changed. The myriad of sea inhabiting humanoids went their separate ways, abandoning the island. Many of them began to war amongst one another; most prominently the Selkie and Xorrto races.

The war did not go well for the Selkie, and their settlements on the eastern shores were devastated. Although the Selkie struck their own blows against the Xorrto, and both races were severely weakened, the Selkie was the loosing side. Although the Selkie successfully retreated to Tikol, the Xorrto gathered up all of their warriors for a final attack.

The Selkie would have been wiped out had it not been for a legendary warrior, one of the Boneclaw family, who severed her ties with the goddess Irriane, and pledged herself to another unknown Immortal. In exchange for this, the Boneclaw warrior received a mighty Trident with which she slew all of the invaders, crippling the Xorrto’s ability to make war for decades.

It was thanks to that warrior that the Selkie were able to fortify themselves in their last settlement; Gelion Cove where they continued to live into the modern age, rebuilding their forces for the day when the Xorrto return.

What became of that warrior and the godly Trident she wielded is unknown, but of her deeds, many Selkie took this as a sign that Irriane had abandoned them and she lost her status as the universal goddess of the Selkie. Although a majority still worshiped her, it was no longer a unanimous racial trait.

The Selkie of Gelion Cove were first discovered by a group of Gnomish explorers, and while the Gnomes chose not to solidify relations with the Selkie, the meeting raised questions as to the presence of other friendly races about Lensmoor they could create alliances with.

With the destruction of Old Lensmoor, the gods declared that the other races world join with the humans and aid them in building a New Lensmoor. The Selkie saw this as an opportunity to forge alliances with the other races; that is what they did. The Selkie are now a part of the greater Lensmoor community and no longer fear extinction at the hands of the Xorrto. As a result, adventurers leave Gelion Cove for the mainland all the time to seek their destiny.
